An experimental horror film that beckons you into the realms of the unknown. This 1989 cinematic experience, directed by E. Elias Merhige (who was also responsible for the screenplay, the cinematography, and the visual effects), defies conventional storytelling and visual norms, offering a haunting and surreal journey into the abyss of art and horror. After a robed deity commits ritual suicide, Mother Earth emerges from his remains and impregnates herself with his seed. She gives birth to the Son of Earth, a malformed man who is promptly abandoned in a desolate wasteland. The Son is captured and tortured to death by nomadic tribes, only to be resurrected by his mother. Their respite is brief; the nomads return to murder Mother Earth, leaving her son to perish. Mysterious robed figures soon arrive to harvest their remains, grinding their bodies into a ritualistic dust and burying them in the soil. This sacrificial act triggers a rebirth, transforming the barren landscape into a lush forest and restarting the harrowing cycle of creation and decay.
