Though not Bergman’s first great film – Summer With Monika, Sawdust and Tinsel, and Smiles of a Summer Night were among those that got there first – this was his major international breakout. It gave us the famous chess match with death, and established the filmmaker’s deft hand with allegory and symbolism. (Chris Vognar)
