This might be a better entry point than The Seventh Seal for Bergman neophytes, and it’s just as strong a film. An aging professor (Swedish film giant Victor Sjöström) takes a trip to receive an honorary degree, entering and exiting dreams and flashbacks with a dexterity unique to Bergman. When all is said and done, it’s also one of Bergman’s most hopeful films. (Chris Vognar)
