Maurice Hall and Clive Durham find themselves falling in love at Cambridge. In a pre-World War I society of stifling conformity where homosexuality is punishable by imprisonment, the two must keep their feelings for one another a complete secret. After a friend is arrested and disgraced for "the unspeakable vice of the Greeks," Clive abandons his forbidden love and marries a young woman. Maurice, however, struggles with his identity and self-confidence, seeking the help of a hypnotist to rid himself of his undeniable urges. But while staying with Clive and his shallow wife, Anne, Maurice is seduced by the affectionate and yearning servant Alec Scudder, an event that brings about profound changes in Maurice's life and outlook.

Houston’s Queer Book Club is space for LGBTQ+ individuals and allies to come together and discuss queer literature. Led by Abby Yesso since 2021, this organization meets monthly in partnership with Brazos Bookstore. The group discussions explore themes of representation, identity, and community across all genres of literature. What started as a monthly bookclub has become a robust community for enjoying queer media in all its forms - from movie club, to writing workshops, to craft nights, QBC is a safe space for all to enjoy. For more information, please follow us on instagram, join our discord server, and sign up for email updates from Brazos Bookstore!
