Taiwan Academy in Houston presents Ang Lee’s acclaimed 1994 film Eat Drink Man Woman (飲食男女), a landmark of Taiwanese cinema and the final installment of Lee’s celebrated “Father Knows Best” trilogy.
Set in Taipei, the film follows a widowed master chef and his three adult daughters as they navigate family, love, tradition, and change. At the center of their weekly Sunday dinners, elaborate dishes become a language of their own—expressing emotions and desires that are often difficult to put into words.
The evening will open with a special introduction by Taiwanese performance artist Nymphia Wind, who will join us to celebrate the film and its place within Taiwan’s vibrant cultural landscape.
Following the screening, Houston Chronicle food critic Bao Ong will moderate a special Q&A exploring the intersection of food, culture, family, and cinema, and why this Taiwanese classic continues to resonate with audiences decades after its original release.
